Meet the Ancients + Giveaway: Pre-order of Gravity + bookmarks

Hi lovelies! You’re in for a treat today. Melissa West, the author of one of the highly anticipated books this year is invading Fragments of Life for a guest post and a giveaway. Stick around for it. ;)

Meet the Ancients
by Melissa West, author of GRAVITY

It’s interesting that aliens have become popular in YA lit recently making some assume this is a new trend. It isn’t. H.G. Wells and John Christopher began the concept many years ago, followed by a wealth of sci-fi writers that wrote everything from scary aliens to E.T.

For GRAVITY, I’ve attempted to introduce an alien species that has always been known to the leaders of Earth. They are called the Ancients and are coined from the scientific theory of “ancient astronauts.” They built our planet. They helped us prosper. But like with all amicable relationships, survival instinct can propel a relationship into hostile territory quickly, leading to one inevitable outcome—war.

The Ancients have one great advantage—advanced intellect. And the humans have one great disadvantage—blind arrogance.

So while you will understand within the first few pages what the tagline “Don’t. Ever. Peek.” means, by the end I hope you’ll see that it’s also metaphorical. It’s a look at the way the humans in GRAVITY view themselves against the Ancients. Do they see them? Do they see themselves? Or do they merely go about their lives never peeking at anything other than what exists in front of them.

And what about you? Do you believe in aliens? If those aliens inhabited Earth, would you eventually view them as one of us or would you always view them as different?

About the Author (from her website):

I'm not one of those writers that can claim to have been writing "all my life." I haven't. But I have been reading all of my life. Does that count? Probably not. I'm a Southerner, raised in a tiny town in SC. Then after graduate school, I moved to Atlanta, GA with my husband and daughter.

I have a B.A. in Communication Studies and an M.S. in Graphic Communication, both from Clemson University.

In addition to all the boring stuff above, I'm addicted to coffee, pretend to like yoga, and am obsessed with shoes. I read frequently, write daily, and adore cooking.

In the future, only one rule will matter: Don’t. Ever. Peek.

Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed--arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.

Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know--especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

  1. Actually I do believe in aliens ... I might have watched too many X-Files episodes though *lol*. And would I ever see them as "one of us"? Probably not, I guess these things need time, generations to be exact to make aliens less alien to mankind.

  2. I believe in aliens, yes, but I don't know that they could be viewed as equals right off the bat, but after time, I suppose they would be a normality

  3. I don't not believe in aliens. We really don't know what's out there so my mind is open. I don't think I could ever view them as exactly like us because they wouldn't be. However, I could accept them as equals.

  4. I don't really believe in aliens but if ever they actually come I will consider them as part of the human race. I will treat them with respect.

  5. I would view them as one of us if somehow they act human, actions and emotions a like.

  6. I don't know if I can view aliens as "one of us." If they looked and acted like humans, maybe. If they were completely different from us, I just don't know.

  7. Not sure I believe in aliens, but I'm not the kind of person to rule anything out :) Great post!!

  8. I do believe in aliens. I think I would EVENTUALLY begin to see them as one of us, but in the beginning I would surely feel a little different around them.

  9. I definitely don't think we're the only life in the universe. But I doubt I'd see any as one of us.

  10. I'm not sure of my exact beliefs when it comes to aliens, but I do find it hard to believe that we are the only living thing out there. I'll admit the subject has always interested me though. One of the many reasons I am so excited for GRAVITY!!

  11. I do believe in some form of alien life. This may not be as intelligent as us, or it could be even more intelligent. Either way, I would view them with caution.

  12. I do believe in aliens! I think it would take several generations until they would be thought of as "normal" or ifully integrated in society - guess it may depend also on what they look like!

    Thanks,

  13. I don't really know what to think about aliens. I feel like there's got to be some other life forms out there somewhere, but where is the question. I feel like it would take a while, but after time, the aliens would become part of our society and I wouldn't see them as all that different anymore.

  14. I do believe in aliens. But I've always seen them as different. Ihope they are no threat to us :P

  15. I believe in aliens, but I will think of them as something else especially if they are not human-like.

  16. I love this post. <3 Also, I adore Melissa :D Sigh. I cannot wait for Gravity. :) And yes. I do believe in aliens. For the most part. Not sure how I would act if they came here. Would be weird, and maybe a bit scary. Maybe. Depends on what kind of alien they are ;p

  17. Actually, I do believe that there is the possibility of other lifeforms out in the vastness of space. If they did come to Earth to live among us, I would want to treat them with respect (and hopefully be treated as such as well). Even if they did appear different, if they are good beings, I see no reason to treat them badly.

  18. I do believe there is other life out there. If they came to Earth, I'd like to say I'd think of them as the same but I don't think I would. I'd still treat them equally of course, but I'd still feel pretty uncomfortable with them being here. I guess I've seen too many scary movies lol.

  19. I don't believe in aliens but I'm so for them in books. Hot Aliens FTW.

  20. As much as I love Doctor Who, I don't really believe in Aliens. I think all those theories about them building the pyramids and such are just a load of crock.

  21. I believe in aliens. Hopefully they're peaceful....

  22. I believe in them. I mean the universe is so fast and we can't possibly know everything thats out there. I just think that yeah, there is probably life out there. I just doubt they are visiting us.

  23. Yes I believe in them! I think that i would view them the same as humans:)

  24. I believe in them because I mean, there's such a big world out there! We can't be the only form of life! -.- They'd probably be really similar to the life we have, but probably with different adaptions... o.O

  25. With the size of the universe, it`s hard to imagine that there isn`t aliens somewhere. If they live, I would love to get along with them (but I can understand how some people wouldn`t treat them the same). I think it all depends on their appearance.

  26. Hmmm... Well I don't necessarily believe in aliens, but who knows??? Maybe they do exist. The universe is really big after all. If they came to earth, I think I would view them differently, especially if they don't look human-like. Because no matter what they are different from us. I would like to get along with them though. :)

  27. I tend to believe in things I see, but I guess aliens or another form of living beings could be out there somewhere. If they truly exist, it'd be really hard for me to view them as one of us but I'd treat them fairly and with respect.

  28. I might not agree with the general perception of aliens (green with large eyes and big heads and skinny bodies), but I definitely believe in life on other planets. It would be really self-absorbed not to. We cannot be the only living beings, especially since there are so many other universes left undiscovered and untravelled. There are other living things out there. We may never make contact, but they're there.
