Angelic Friday: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Angelic Friday is a new Meme started by me, that features books that explore the lives of angels, nephilims and fallen angels.

Book Description:

(From the back of the book) When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder – much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing – not even a smear of blood – to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know….

My Thoughts:

The first book of the Mortal Instruments successfully grabbed my attention and refused to let go. This is one of the best written books I've ever read. I love the way Cassandra Clare writes - very descriptive, creating vivid imagery in such a way that I could really see New York, City of Bones and the Institute as if I was there with Clary. The characters were very unique and likable and I had fun meeting them.

On a trip to Pandemonium, a club, Clary finds out that she can see something/someone that nobody else can see. This seems to make her uneasy. Lots of questions are popping in her head. Who are they? Why did they kill the boy? Why do I see them when nobody else does? It was a mystery to her, along with the other mysteries of her life.

Jace and Clary grow closer with every minute that they spend together. I really liked the relationship that was budding between the two of them. But then the unexpected happens. I read City of Ahes first before reading City of Bones, so I wasn't that much shocked when the relationship of Clary and Jace was revealed. However, I could still feel the tension emanating from both characters. To add up to this tension, Clary finds out that Valentine - the Shadowhunter bad guy is her dad. The man who is responsible behind the demon attack and for the disapperance of her mom.

I love this book so much! The concept of runes is so unique, as well as the Nephilims taking the role of protectors against demons. And yes, Jace and Clary at the attic garden is probably one of the best scenes ever.

City of Bones is a great world of paranormal creatures, that is full of action, magic and humor. It's a story of finding the truth, awareness, and revelations of secrets that may or may not shatter the thing inside the ribcage.
