Waiting on Wednesday: Halflings + Tokyo Heist + The Forgetting Curve

I’ve missed Waiting on Wednesday for a few weeks now. So I’m coming back with three books, from different genres!

Halflings by Heather Burch
Publication Date: January 2012
Published by: Zondervan

In the first book of the Halfling Trilogy, Nikki Youngblood discovers she’s the central force of a madman’s plan, and turns to three half-angel boys for protection. With the Halflings, she’s completely safe. Everything except her heart. And Mace’s soul. Falling for him could ensure his eternal ruin.

After being inexplicably targeted by an evil intent on harming her at any cost, seventeen-year-old Nikki finds herself under the watchful guardianship of three mysterious young men who call themselves halflings. Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with.

A growing attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. While she risks a broken heart, Mace and Raven could lose everything, including their souls. As the mysteries behind the boys’ powers, as well as her role in a scientist’s dark plan, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that will affect the future of an entire race of heavenly beings, as well as the precarious equilibrium of the earthly world.

Why I Chose This:

I love the sound of this. Halflings – half-angel boys with a girl? And secrets and romance? I’m up for it! It’s been a long time since I’ve read an angel book and I’m eager to dive into this novel!

Tokyo Heist by Diana Renn
Publication Date: June 14, 2012
Published by: Viking

Sixteen-year-old Violet loves reading manga and wearing scarves made from kimono fabric, so she’s thrilled that her father’s new painting commission means a summer trip to Japan. But what starts as an exotic vacation quickly turns into a dangerous treasure hunt. Her father’s client, the wealthy Yamada family, is the victim of a high-profile art robbery. Someone has stolen van Gogh sketches from the Yamadas’ Seattle mansion, and is holding them hostage until the Yamadas can produce the corresponding van Gogh painting. The problem is that nobody knows where this painting is hidden, and until they find it, all of their lives are in danger.

Violet’s search for the missing van Gogh takes her from the Seattle Art Museum, to the yakuza-infested streets of Tokyo, to a secluded inn in Kyoto. As the mystery deepens, Violet’s not sure whom she can trust. But she knows one thing: she has to find the painting and the criminals—before it’s too late.

Why I Chose This:

I haven’t read a book set in Tokyo yet. This will be the first one, if I ever get my hands on a copy (I really hope so!) I love the exotic vibe that this book gives off, take that and add it to mangas, missing paintings and criminals; you’ll have the perfect mystery book for me.

The Forgetting Curve by Angie Smibert
Publication Date: Spring 2012
Published by: Marshall Cavendish

Aiden Nomura likes to open doors—especially using his skills as a hacker—to see what’s hidden inside. He believes everything is part of a greater system: the universe. The universe shows him the doors, and he keeps pulling until one cracks open. Aiden exposes the flaw, and the universe—or someone else—will fix it. It’s like a game.
Until it isn’t.

When a TFC opens in Bern, Switzerland, where Aiden is attending boarding school, he knows things are changing. Shortly after, bombs go off within quiet, safe Bern. Then Aiden learns that his cousin Winter, back in the States, has had a mental breakdown. He returns to the US immediately.

But when he arrives home in Hamilton, Winter’s mental state isn’t the only thing that’s different. The city is becoming even stricter, and an underground movement is growing.
Along with Winter’s friend, Velvet, Aiden slowly cracks open doors in this new world. But behind those doors are things Aiden doesn’t want to see—things about his society, his city, even his own family. And this time Aiden may be the only one who can fix things . . . before someone else gets hurt.

Why I Chose this:

Zomg!! Zomg!! It’s finally here! I don’t like this cover as much as I liked the cover of Memento Nora but I have to admit. The guy in the cover is really good-looking. Right? The synopsis also makes me more curious. I’ve been waiting for the sequel eversince I read Memento. I can’t wait for this. Dystopian readers, you have to read this.
