Waiting on Wednesday: The Eleventh Plague + Juliet Immortal + Glow

This week I have a Triple Treat Waiting on Wednesday for you! There are just too many books to pick just one.

The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch
Publication Date: September 1, 2011
Published by: Scholastic

“With its crumbling Starbucks and rusting theme parks, The Eleventh Plague hits disturbingly close to home, vividly depicting a world that has nose-dived into a futuristic nightmare. Fifteen-year-old Stephen Quinn struggles to define his rules of survival in Jeff Hirsch’s excellent, taut debut novel.” — Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games

In an America devastated by war and plague, the only way to survive is to keep moving.
In the aftermath of a war, America’s landscape has been ravaged and two thirds of the population left dead from a vicious strain of influenza. Fifteen-year-old Stephen Quinn and his family were among the few that survived and became salvagers, roaming the country in search of material to trade for food and other items essential for survival.
But when Stephen’s grandfather dies and his father falls into a coma after an accident, Stephen finds his way to Settler’s Landing, a community that seems too good to be true, where there are real houses, barbecues, a school, and even baseball games. Then Stephen meets strong, defiant, mischievous Jenny, who refuses to accept things as they are. And when they play a prank that goes horribly wrong, chaos erupts, and they find themselves in the midst of a battle that will change Settler’s Landing forever.

Why I Chose This:

I love dystopian novels! Look at the amazing blurb at the top by Suzanne Collins. She called this excellent! Wow. That is really something that will pull readers in. There’s also something with the rusting theme parks that I like. It has a creepy, abandoned vibe that I like.

Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay
Publication Date: September 13, 2011
Published by: Delacorte Press

"These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which as they kiss consume."
—Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

The most tragic love story in history . . .

Juliet Capulet didn't take her own life. She was murdered by the person she trusted most, her new husband, Romeo Montague, a sacrifice made to ensure his own immortality. But what Romeo didn't anticipate was that Juliet would be granted eternity, as well, and would become an agent for the Ambassadors of Light. For 700 years, she's fought Romeo for the souls of true lovers, struggling to preserve romantic love and the lives of the innocent. Until the day she meets someone she's forbidden to love, and Romeo, oh Romeo, will do everything in his power to destroy that love.

Why I Chose This:

I’m not that crazy about Romeo & Juliet. But I did read it. Now, Stacey Jay makes everything about the classic tale exciting. Betrayal, love, destruction and rivalry? I want!

Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan
Publication Date: September 27, 2011
Published by: St. Martin’s Griffin

What if you were bound for a new world, about to pledge your life to someone you'd been promised to since birth, and one unexpected violent attack made survival—not love—the issue?

Out in the murky nebula lurks an unseen enemy: the New Horizon. On its way to populate a distant planet in the wake of Earth's collapse, the ship's crew has been unable to conceive a generation to continue its mission. They need young girls desperately, or their zealous leader's efforts will fail. Onboard their sister ship, the Empyrean, the unsuspecting families don't know an attack is being mounted that could claim the most important among them...

Fifteen-year-old Waverly is part of the first generation to be successfully conceived in deep space; she was born on the Empyrean, and the large farming vessel is all she knows. Her concerns are those of any teenager—until Kieran Alden proposes to her. The handsome captain-to-be has everything Waverly could ever want in a husband, and with the pressure to start having children, everyone is sure he's the best choice. Except for Waverly, who wants more from life than marriage—and is secretly intrigued by the shy, darkly brilliant Seth.

But when the Empyrean faces sudden attack by their assumed allies, they quickly find out that the enemies aren't all from the outside.

Glow is the most riveting series debut since The Hunger Games, and promises to thrill and challenge readers of all ages.

Why I Chose This:

I just found out about this last Monday. A fellow blogger added it to Goodreads and I was drawn to the cover.. the “O” specifically. After I read the synopsis, I was excited. I’m not much of a sci-fi fan but there’s something in this that really attracted me. Maybe it was the hinting at the love triangle, the impending doom or the last sentence where it said that it promises to thrill and challenge readers.

What about you? Do you have a book you’re waiting for? Leave your link below so I can see too!

  3. These books sound pretty darn amazing. I do love dystopian novels, but I think I'm more intrigued by Juliet Immortal. R+J wasn't my favorite Shakespeare play, but since I've been forced to read it so many times for school, I think I can appreciate the twist!

  11. I haven't heard of any of these but I love the premise of Juliet Immortal so I'll be adding it to my wishlist, and I like the realism in The Eleventh Plague because there are already parts of the world where people are scavenging for metals to trade for food.
